Literary Awards: Newberry Medal 1963, Sequoyah Book Award 1965. Reading this book is a good imagination workout. I love its mysticism. The fantasy elements, time and space travel. When L'Engle writes about 'the dark thing', I can actually feel its seeping darkness. I also loved Mrs. Who's quotes. I recommend this to any teenage readers. As an adult, it felt like being a child again. Mesmerized by magical beings & endless possibilities in outer space.

My first Eugenide novel. I was captured with his storytelling & narration. The way he shifts from Cal to Calliope then the unexpected narration of the author to the reader. There are some lull chapters but a handful of interesting chapters override it. I love its climax. At first, I thought its all about hermaphrodism, but no, its just a chunk of the protagonist's omniscient, mutated cell.

A story about two Afghan women, Mariam & Laila in the midst of Afghanistan's chaotic history. The novel portrays how the constantly changing political situation & war-lords impact an individual's family & village life. I felt the suffering & pain Mariam & Laila go through to endure the oppression & wars. Behind the difficulties & uncertainties, there's this atmosphere of hope displayed by the characters. I did not shed a tear, but yes, there's a lump in my throat. I was enthralled with Hosseini's exceptional storytelling & powerful emotions.

I loved the historical fiction. The transition of timelines is amusing. I didn't focus much on Max & Shelley's love story. I didn't like Shelley but I loved the other characters. What captured me most is the different identities of Max Gallus. I always loved the story behind the history. Oh, and the baked eggs got me curious. What's the recipe? What could be that secret ingredient? A pinch of ----. Tsk!
